Don't let people tell you there is no poverty in southern Chester County...

This report on local childhood poverty offers a stark picture of growing needs in southern Chester County.  The report reveals that there were 1,903 area children ages 5 to 17 living in poverty in 2011, a  65% increase in five years.  Carrie Freeman, CEO for the United Way of Southern Chester County, remarked, “These statistics reflect what our agencies feel every day.  The recession has put enormous pressure on our neighbors.” To view the full report, click here.

UWSCC will always remain independent...serving our little corner of the world

Bigger isn't necessarily better.  Our Board of Directors voted to remain independent when asked to be part of a merger between United Way of Southeastern PA and the United Ways located in southern New Jersey.   They became United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.  We remained United Way of SOUTHERN Chester County, devoted to serving just the needs of southern Chester County.

Our focus has always been local. Our Kennett Square location keeps us in close touch with our area's non-profits. The decision to remain independent allows us to continue to identify unmet needs in our community, build coalitions to create solutions that fit our area's unique needs, and ensure that donations made to us are put to work in our own community.

We are proud of our organization and grateful for your support. As the largest funder for local non-profits in our area, we remain committed to improve the lives of our neighbors in need.

Thank you all for your continued support of our mutual work.

Our new non-discrimination policy in action

United Way of Southern Chester County embraces inclusiveness, diversity, and equal opportunity as core values.  We understand that the community is stronger when the gifts of all people are respected, embraced and maximized to build a healthier community.

We consider non-discrimination a vital component to any organization and we mentor area agencies to adopt best practices and a strong non-discrimination policy.   In November of 2014, the UWSCC Board of Directors approved our Policy on Eligibility for Partner Agencies which contains criteria addressing non-discrimination in all levels of a non-profit organization to be eligible for United Way funding.

UWSCC requires all agencies requesting United Way funding to have a written board-approved policy, stating that the agency does not discriminate with respect to board members, staff, or volunteers, or in its recipients of services on the basis of race, color, sex or gender, age, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation or other characteristics protected by law.

Perhaps you didn't know that UWSCC has its own endowment fund. Its intent is to permanently benefit our southern Chester County community.
