Background

The United Way of Southern Chester County (UWSCC) raises and distribute funds to nonprofit organizations with health and human service agendas, builds coalitions and inspires volunteerism, and ensures that contributions fund programs that effectively move people from crisis to independence. UWSCC, based in Kennett Square, PA, serves the residents of four school districts: Avon Grove, Kennett Consolidated, Oxford Area, and Unionville-Chadds Ford. Southern Chester County is home to 21% of Chester County’s population, and 46% of the County’s Hispanic population. UWSCC funding helps over 18,000 residents each year. Led by a staff of four and a volunteer board of 27 committed directors, UWSCC works to provide a stable funding source for an array of vital local human service programs. The annual fundraising objective exceeds $1 million with the majority of funds provided by individual donors across the community. Award decisions are made by trained community volunteers based on annual agency funding requests.

Position Summary

The CEO is the heart and driving force for the United Way of Southern County ensuring the vision, activities, resources, and organization capabilities are built and efficiently deployed to maximize impact in moving people from crisis to stability.  The role of the CEO is as follows:

  • Motivate, support,  and connect Southern Chester County’s nonprofit organizations to maximize impact
  • Lead an annual fundraising campaign to meet each year’s campaign goal
  • Develop and implement a plan to raise funds from high net worth individuals
  • Ensure the short and long term financial well-being of the organization to support the community
  • Execute the organization’s strategic plan
  • Persuasively communicate the impact and necessity of UWSCC services to the community
  • Raise awareness for the services provided by UWSCC agencies to residents
  • Engage UWSCC with numerous community stakeholders and the media

Qualifications and Skills

The requirements listed below are representative of the attributes, knowledge, skills, and abilities prioritized by the Board of Directors.

Management and Collaborative Leadership

  • At least 5 years of professional experience with increasing management responsibilities, preferably in the nonprofit sector
  • Previous success in establishing strong working relationships with local nonprofits
  • Ability to function as a local convener and connector
  • Collaborative and flexible management style with the ability to inspire and develop staff, set expectations, and monitor progress
  • Bold leader who is not afraid to pursue new opportunities

Fundraising

  • Active fundraising experience with a proven ability to cultivate new donations from high net worth individuals
  • Ability to develop and implement strategies for cultivating new as well as younger donors
  • Ability to adapt fundraising strategies to keep up with trends in the philanthropic sector
  • Successful grant writing experience

Communication

  • Outstanding presentation and communication skills
  • The experience and ability to be an articulate spokesperson and organization champion
  • Proven ability to lead engagement with civic leaders, volunteers, and the media
  • Previous success in establishing external relationships with individuals and organizations of influence, including civic leaders, partner agencies and volunteers
  • Ability to initiate new relationships and be the face of UWSCC
  • A natural influencer with an engaging personality

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $90,000 to $100,000, but the actual salary for the candidate selected will be based on their background and skills. Benefits include company-subsidized medical insurance, vision coverage, long term disability, and generous Personal Time Off.  Benefits also include employer contributions to a retirement plan.
