Meet this Month's Featured Success Story

24% of students start school on Day One already behind at Mary D. Lang Kindergarten Center in Kennett Square.

These littlest community members...

  • have never attended pre-school
  • may not have had to put on their coats or go to the bathroom by themselves
  • don't know what it means when someone says "line up"
  • have never sat for circle time instruction
  • have never ridden a bus
  • may never have had a book read to them

United Way of Southern Chester County wants all kids (big and small) to start school off right.

So we funded a successful pilot program that provided education, practice and readiness to start their academic careers on the right foot!

Keeping Kids Engaged in Education During the Summer Months

Summer...makes you think of fun, freedom, bare feet, summer camps and beach vacations...but...

  • Not all kids can experience summer travel or camps...
  • Not all kids can afford opportunities that keep their brains stimulated in the summer months...
  • Not all kids have a safe place to go in the summer while their parents work...

United Way of Southern Chester County wants all kids to have a great summer.  So, we fund some programs that provide fun, safe andeducational opportunities for younger kids...throughout the summer and year-round too.

YoungMoms Community - Thania (Tonya)

Good mothers...can produce GREAT people! But what happens when a young mom needs help? That's where the YoungMoms community steps in... And we, at United Way of Southern Chester County, are proud to be a funder of this terrific organization.

Meet Thania. She is a young married mom of three. You wouldn't think that she needs the support of a YoungMoms Community...but she did.

Hear her compelling story...

Family Promise - In southern Chester County, homelessness is growing at an alarming rate. You may not know it, but you probably encounter someone every day who is or has been homeless ... but they don't look like it.

When you hear homeless - you think the guy on the corner asking for money from passing cars. The drug addict squatting in an abandoned home. Maybe you even envision tent cities you've only heard about on the news.

You certainly don't think about the teller at your local bank who just cashed your check with well wishes and a big smile.

Meet Ashley. She was homeless... But now she has sustainable housing, a job with advancement opportunities, and a secure future.

Ashley, Family Promise of Southern Chester County

Previous Success Story - Erika, Adult Literacy Program at Kennett Library

Adult Literacy Program - It's so easy to ignore those we can't understand. Or to deem them to be 'different' than us.  Have you considered that maybe they have the same hopes and dreams as we do? Listen to Erika tell her story about the pride she feels when her kids can say how proud of her they are... Isn't that what we all want? This is possible because of the wonderful work of the Adult Literacy Program.

Previous Success Story - Pennie, Oxford Senior Center

So often we don't see the suffering right in front of us. Or, we do, and don't know where to turn. The Oxford Area Senior Center is a place where can seniors turn when hope seems lost or they need additional support. While Pennie isn't someone who you might consider to be in 'need' - she was. Listen to her compelling story of how the senior center 'saved' her - literally.
